Fleet Drivers 'key to reducing deaths on road'   ()

The government will target fleet drivers in its attempts to lower the number of people killed on Britain's roads every year, it has been stated.

Rob Gifford, executive director of the Parliamentary Advisory Council for Transport Safety (PACTS), said that the government has enjoyed success at reducing road traffic deaths, Fleet News reported.

He claimed that the number of fatalities throughout 2008 could stand at 2,600 - a step forward in the target of cutting the numbers of those seriously injured or killed by 40 per cent by 2010.

The reduction in road casualties can be attributed, in part, to a drop in the number of crashes involving people driving for their job, the website said.

"We believe 1,000 deaths a year is a reasonable level to aim for," Mr Gifford told a road safety conference.

Employers looking to improve the standard of driving in their workforce, as well as improving their road safety practices, should visit Norwich Union's Roadsense website, which includes an online self assessment tool and advice on how to minimise the risks involved with driving.
